The cleanest and cheapest energy is wind and solar power. The most expensive energy is from oil, gas and coal which are dirty and costly. There are companies that have invested billions of dollars and years of planning in partnership with federal agencies to develop wind power. Wind power alone would provide power for millions of homes. Guess who doesn’t like “windmills”? Of course, Donald Trump who wants to keep his donors in the fossil fuel business happy. One company RWE US is getting $1.22 billions dollars back from its investments with the government with the promise it will only invest it fossil fuel development. It’s working on a $900 million dollar investment in a liquefied natural gas project in Louisiana and $300 million in natural gas turbines. States which are losing offshore wind energy are suing.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the guy who tried to cover up the botched lining job in the Reflecting Pool in Washington, is following Trump’s lead. He says that Americans “deserve an energy system build on common sense, not one dependent on costly subsidies”. Most experts believe wind power is cheaper for consumers. Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse says it’s a story of the cost of billions of dollars for consumers and corruption by the Trump administration to pay off fossil fuel donors. Several other big companies are using their refunds from the federal government to now invest in dirty fossil fuel development.
Trump is also after solar power. Solar power companies are thriving. That’s not good for Trump’s friends in the oil and gas business. His administration is cutting back on federal support for solar projects. The Biden Administration was giving a 30% residential tax credit for people who installed solar power. Trump killed the program under his “Big Beautiful Bill.” He also put a 15 % tariff on products imported for use in the solar industry. He has stopped support for solar panels on farmlands which could be an extra source of income for farmers. Solar has remained the single largest source of new power capacity for over two consecutive years. It made up just over 72 % of all electricity additions at the end of 2025. The need for more energy is surging with the building a big data centers which use a tremendous amount of energy.
States that voted for Trump in 2024 accounted for 74% of all solar capacity installed in the first quarter of 2026. The top states are Texas, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Arizona and Mississippi. Despite this the Trump EPA has canceled the 7-billion-dollar Solar for All grant program in August 2025. But solar power companies are fighting back. Data released this summer by the Solar Energy Industries Association showed solar power growth and the decline of coal in the US despites attempts to kill it. In May for the first time, solar supplied more of the country’s electricity 12.8% than coal 12.2%.
It’s amazing how dumb and short-sighted Trump and his gang sycophants are when they look at the world around them. Climate change, which Trump says is a “scam”, is heating the planet like never before and our winters seem to be colder. The demand for power will only be stronger. We are being led down a dangerous path that future generations will pay for. We should look to windmills and sunshine for answers.
