It started with the woman who almost never speaks in public. Suddenly, last Thursday Melania Trump walked out to a podium in the White House in her perfectly tailored suit and talked about the last thing her husband wants to hear about, Jeffery Epstein. She said, “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today. The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility and respect.” It sounded like she was talking about her husband. She went on to say she had never been friends with Epstein. She said she and Trump were invited to the same parties as Epstein because he was in overlapping social circles. She was not an Epstein victim, never been on his plane or his private island and didn’t know he was a sexual predator. She said she has taken legal action against publications and individuals who she said spread unfounded and baseless lies. She called for congressional hearings for the Epstein’s victims. The address lasted only a few minutes then she turned around walked back inside.
It’s unclear if Trump knew this was coming. Some would say Trump started a war to get the country off the topic of Epstein. Taken in historical context, this was something no other First Lady ever came close to talking about in public. It could be viewed as Melania throwing Trump under the bus. He has made all kinds of explanations about his relationship with Epstein and how he broke it off and didn’t know about Epstein’s alleged crimes. He keeps calling the topic “a hoax” that no one wants to talk about. Well, Melania wanted to talk about it. She seemed to be saying, I’m doing this once and this is it. If you want to keep going after Trump, leave me out of it.
A couple days later, Trump found new enemy to go after, the Pope. Yes, the Pope! The first American Pope and a Chicago White Sox fan. Pope Leo has been critical of war being the answer to civilizations problems. Without mentioning the War with Iran specifically, Pope Leo said, “Today we lift up our prayer for peace for peace in the world, asking that nations renounce weapons and choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy.” That sounds reasonable. Trump’s responded by calling the Pope “weak on crime (he’s a convicted felon) and terrible on foreign policy. I don’t want the Pope to think it’s ok for Iran to have a nuclear weapon.” He added, “I’m not a big fan (of the Pope.) Pope Leo said he’s not afraid of the Trump administration and will continue to speak against war. Going after the Pope just makes Trump look like the irrational bully he is.
And finally, in the one of the most bizarre weeks in recent US history, the Jesus-Trump picture. I’m sure you’ve seen it, just Google it. Trump posted it himself. It shows Trump as a Christ-like figure in white and red robes laying his hand on a man lying in bed obviously ill. There are bright lights coming from heaven behind Trump and, of course, an American flag. There are figures looking up and down on Trump in awe. Trump’s explanation after outraged reaction, “I viewed it as a picture of me being a doctor in fixing, you had the Red Cross right there, you had, you know, medical people surrounding me. I was like a doctor, you know, as a little fun playing doctor and making people better”. This sounds like a kid getting caught at something he shouldn’t have been doing. He removed the post quickly.
All this in the middle of a war Trump started with Iran and doesn’t know how to get out of. He is delusional and dangerous and surrounded by sycophants who are terrified of saying no to him. Maybe Melania, Pope Leo and Jesus should have an intervention. Nothing else is working.
